Located next to the Malmi Cemetery—the largest burial ground in Finland—the newly completed Malmi Mortuary and Farewell Spaces in Helsinki was designed as a direct response to the infrastructure strains of a rapidly aging population. But rather than executing a sterile institutional facility, the architects have crafted a deeply tactile, non-religious sanctuary designed to host a multicultural spectrum of grief.

A Dichotomy of Function and Ceremony

The building is meticulously partitioned into two distinct halves, separating the operational realities of a mortuary from the sensitive, emotional journey of saying goodbye.

• The Eastern Half (The Functional Core): This single-storey wing handles the practical mortuary operations. Extending vertically from this volume is a striking, tower-like brick form with a soft, curved edge. This tower serves as a multi-level storage area for the deceased. Designing for a Pluralistic Society

To accommodate the diverse traditions of Helsinki’s increasingly multicultural population, Verstas Architects designed four dedicated farewell rooms. These spaces are intentionally minimalist and non-denominational, serving as neutral backdrops that families can personalize with small ritual items or mementos.

The architecture uses subtle material shifts to honor different cultural and religious washing rituals without fracturing the overall aesthetic cohesion of the building:

• Two of the four rooms feature integrated sinks specifically for ritual purification.

• In these specific rooms, the standard stone floors are replaced with pale, unglazed brick tiles, providing a warmer, texturally grounded surface underfoot.

The Material Palette of Light and Silence

To combat the clinical coldness often associated with institutional mortuaries, the public spaces are built entirely from a timeless, serene palette of natural materials:

• Travertine Stone: The floors and walls of the farewell rooms are lined with pale travertine. Rather than bouncing light harshly, the porous, soft stone absorbs it, enveloping the room in a gentle, warm glow.

Instead, massive, south-facing ceiling lanterns slice through the roof plate. These deep, sculptural lightwells capture overhead daylight and wash it down the travertine walls, providing a soft, ethereal connection to the sky above.

By letting structural honesty dictate the form and focusing heavily on how natural materials manipulate light and sound, Verstas Architects has created an architecture that doesn’t intrude on grief, but gently holds it.

Achieving absolute acoustic comfort in a quiet space—particularly a contemplative, sacred, or healing environment—requires a two-pronged strategy: absorption (to eliminate echo and reduce reverberation time) and diffusion (to scatter sound waves so the space doesn’t feel completely dead or claustrophobic).

Most coastal residential designs treat the building as a passive viewing platform, organizing every room to stare directly at the horizon line. But on a rugged, exposed sand dune in Te Arai, New Zealand, local studio Roberts Gray Architects chose a far more introspective and site-responsive path.

Their latest project, Double Courtyard House, deliberately rejects the standard "glass box looking at the sea" trope. Instead, it balances low-slung, monolithic volumes of rammed earth around two radically contrasting courtyards.

A Site of Dual Personalities

The design emerged directly from the unique friction of the plot's geography. The sand dune sits at an environmental crossroads, hemmed in by a dense pine forest on one side and exposed to sweeping, unprotected ocean vistas on the other.

Rather than picking a side, the architects created a figure-of-eight floor plan composed of two distinct intersecting pavilions. This layout allows the house to act as both an oasis of deep shelter and a continuous extension of the wild coastal landscape.

Where these two worlds collide, a central hallway acts as a sensory transition zone. In a single moment of arrival, the low, focused, cool air of the forest floor meets the blinding coastal light and salt air sweeping in from the ocean pavilion.

The Honest Material Palette

Given the punishing nature of a coastal dune environment—high winds, salt spray, and intense UV exposure—the material choices are unyielding and heavily tactile.

The monolithic walls are composed of thick rammed earth, which screens out the wind and serves as high thermal mass to regulate indoor temperatures. On the interior, these earth walls read as solid structural piers separating massive expanses of glass.

The rest of the palette stays anchored in raw, elemental finishes:

• Sandblasted concrete floors that handle tracked-in sand with ease.

• Bead-blasted steelwork for integrated kitchen storage and heavy countertops.

• Movable slatted timber screens that slide across the glass facades, letting the owners manually tune the amount of light, shadow, and wind penetrating the living spaces.

By playing with architectural opposites—thick roofs meeting thin, hip roofs juxtaposing flat planes, and heavy, opaque earth receiving operable glass—Double Courtyard House proves that coastal architecture can be robust, deeply protective, and spiritually tied to its landscape all at once.

The Art of Disappearing: Green Lodge by Stylus Architects

In dense, historic urban environments, expanding a home usually means building up, fighting for airspace, or clashing with strict local preservation codes. London practice Stylus Architects took the exact opposite approach for a family home in southwest London. They went down.

Dubbed Green Lodge, this partially submerged residence in Roehampton Village demonstrates how smart contextual design can carve out spatial luxury without disrupting a historic streetscape.

Navigating a Heritage Canvas

The site itself presented an intricate puzzle. Tucked on the edge of Putney Heath, the plot is tightly hemmed in by protected mature trees, a Gothic Revival church, Victorian villas, and classic Arts and Crafts homes.

Faced with rigid local planning constraints that strictly capped the home's above-ground scale, lead architect Matthew Withers chose architectural restraint over a loud, towering statement. From the road, Green Lodge presents itself as a modest, single-story volume topped by an asymmetric vaulted roof.

To create a unified, sculptural envelope, the studio clad both the exterior walls and the roof in the exact same material: untreated larch. Over time, this honey-colored timber will weather naturally, fading into a muted, silvery-grey finish that will allow the low-profile structure to blend into the surrounding tree canopy and stone facades. As Withers puts it, "It was always conceived as something to be discovered rather than announced."

Flipping the Residential Layout

To maximize the home's square footage, Stylus Architects split the program across two levels, completely upending the traditional domestic layout:

• The Upper (Ground) Floor: Houses the bright, open-plan communal spaces—the living room, kitchen, and dining areas—directly beneath the asymmetric vaulted timber ceilings.

Defeating the "Basement Feel"

The ultimate challenge of underground residential design is avoiding a dark, damp subterranean atmosphere. Stylus Architects bypassed this by embedding a strict daylighting strategy into the home's structural bones.

The interior layout is anchored around two continuous, full-height fair-faced concrete spine walls that slice through the house from the basement up to the roof. The architects then cut two large, south-facing sunken lightwells directly into the earth. These lightwells serve as private, sunken outdoor terraces while acting as massive light catchers that flood the below-ground bedrooms and bathrooms with direct daylight.

Complementing the lightwells, a massive central rooflight is positioned directly over the main oak staircase, channeling a column of natural light straight into the deepest core of the lower level.

Earth as a Thermal Blanket

Beyond managing visual impact, embedding the house into the landscape provides massive environmental perks. The surrounding earth functions as a natural insulation blanket, regulating internal temperatures against seasonal shifts. Meanwhile, the raw, exposed internal concrete spine walls provide high thermal mass—absorbing ambient heat during the day and gradually releasing it back into the living spaces during cooler hours.

Inside, the industrial texture of the fair-faced concrete is softened by a highly precise layer of warm oak joinery, built-in storage walls, and window seats, proving that minimalist restraint doesn't have to mean sacrificing a warm, inviting atmosphere.

The Final Curtain: Frank Gehry’s Ripple of Light Begins Construction in Abu Dhabi

Construction has officially broken ground on Dar Al Funoon Abu Dhabi, a sweeping performing arts landmark designed by the legendary Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry before his passing late last year at the age of 96.

Set to anchor the cultural district of Saadiyat Island with a targeted completion date of 2030, this project stands as one of the very last completed testaments to Gehry's lifelong obsession with sculptural, deconstructivist forms that challenge the rigid paradigms of traditional architecture.

A Sculptural Fabric of Glass and Steel

Inside, the venue is a massive, multi-tiered complex meticulously calibrated for world-class acoustics and performance art. The layout houses:

• A 2,000-seat main performance hall for opera, ballet, and large-scale theater productions.

• A sprawling 3,500-seat open-air amphitheater designed to embrace the region's cooler seasons.

• An intimate 400-seat theater for experimental and localized productions.

• A 250-seat jazz venue offering a close-up, acoustically warm setting.

The Saadiyat Island Architectural Dialogue

Dar Al Funoon replaces a conceptual design proposed for the same location nearly two decades ago by Zaha Hadid, which lost momentum after her passing. The bridge between Frank Gehry’s loose, expressive hand sketches and a structurally sound building relies on a highly sophisticated computational process. Gehry famously disliked how early architecture software flattened his curves, so his studio did something radical: they imported master-level software from the aerospace and automotive industries to handle the math.

To turn a crumpled, fabric-like concept into actual structural steel and glass panels, Gehry Partners relies on a distinct, non-linear workflow.

1. Physical Sculpting to Digital Clouds (Digitizing)

The process doesn't start on a screen. Gehry and his team begin by building large-scale physical working models using paper, cardboard, fabric, and wooden blocks.

Once a physical shape is approved, the studio uses a high-precision digitizing stylus—essentially a physical probe connected to an advanced 3D tracking arm—to manually trace along the surfaces and edges of the paper-and-fabric model. This mechanical probe captures thousands of precise coordinate points ($X, Y, Z$ data), generating a highly accurate digital point cloud of the organic curves.

2. The Power of Digital Project (CATIA)

To translate that chaotic point cloud into buildable math, Gehry co-founded a separate technology company (Gehry Technologies) to adapt CATIA, a heavy-duty aerospace modeling software developed by Dassault Systèmes. They created a specialized architectural version called Digital Project.

Unlike standard architectural software that struggles with complex curves, Digital Project is engineered to handle surfaces with double curvature (surfaces that curve in two directions simultaneously, like a sail or an egg). The software mathematically defines Gehry's sweeping "fabric" shapes as fluid, continuous surfaces, ensuring that every wrinkle and twist is mapped to precise mathematical equations.

3. "Rationalizing" the Curvature

You cannot easily bend thick structural steel columns or massive sheets of plate glass into unpredictable, irregular shapes without costs skyrocketing. This is where rationalization comes in.

Using custom parametric scripts, the engineering team analyzes the fluid digital surface and breaks it down into a grid of smaller, flatter components. The algorithm tries to achieve two main things:

• Planarization: It calculates how to twist the grid so that the maximum number of individual glass or metal facade panels can be completely flat (planar) or single-curved (bent in only one direction), while still perfectly creating the overall illusion of a continuous, fluid wave.

• Repetition within Variation: The software optimizes the shapes so that even though the building looks completely random, many panels share identical geometric properties, making fabrication realistic.

   

  Direct-to-Factory Fabrication

  Once the digital model in Digital Project is finalized, the studio doesn't print out traditional paper blueprints for the contractors. The 3D data is sent directly to the fabrication shop floors via CNC (Computer Numerical Control) data files.

  Automated laser cutters, robotic steel rollers, and glass-bending kilns read the digital coordinates directly from the model. Each piece of steel and every single facade panel is cut to a unique, exact dimension, stamped with a specific barcode, and shipped to the construction site like a giant, highly complex puzzle piece. On-site, construction crews use GPS and laser-guided surveying equipment to place each piece into its exact coordinate space in mid-air.

  By treating the building envelope as an aerodynamic system rather than a traditional wall, the studio successfully ensures that the raw, romantic energy of a crumpled piece of paper survives the brutal logic of structural engineering.
